Upcoming Programs and Workshops

February: Susan Edmonson, “Creative Journey”

Susan Edmonson is an award winning quilt maker who started this journey in 1981 and today continues to wow her audiences with her unique artistry. She has designed quilt patterns and kits for two national stores as well as her own pattern line.

Her specialties have been folk art, crazy quilted purses and wall quilts, and “flower doodles.” Fabric collage books and mini art quilts are among her newest creations using mixed media techniques. All of her work is lavished with beading and embroidery. She loves working with vintage style fabrics and colors. The patterns she designs have evolved from original pieces inspired from vintage quilt designs and nature that showcase her own unique style. She will talk to us about her creative journey.

Wednesday, February 18th -- Twigs and Tweets workshop
We will make one block from this unique project.

March: Kimberly Einmo

The March monthly meeting, March 17^th, will feature Kimberly Einmo, an author, award winning quilter, designer, international instructor, and quilt judge. She has written five books, including her newest, Modern Quilts and More, plus Jelly Roll Quilts & More and Jelly Roll Magic. Kimberly has been referred to as “The Jelly Roll Lady.”

Cowlumbia! Check out the Houston CowQuilts that have taken the pasture by storm. Mary Lou Weidman started a twist on words using the “Out of the Box With Easy Blocks” ideas. We will learn more about joining this herd, but google Houston Cow Quilts for your ideas!

July’s Christmas fabric “exchange.” Buy your yard of beautiful Christmas fabric now and bring it to the July meeting. We will start our Christmas projects early with a bag of Christmas fabrics! Learn more at our meetings! Just buy the fabric now!! (And if you think you might forget where you put the fabric between now and then, let Anita know and she’ll remind you where you “hid” it for safe keeping!)

A 6 part mystery quilt will start in April. This is an easy project that would be great to work on during our Sit and Sews or to make for a charity quilt. Cost will be $5.00.

“Rest in Pieces”

Here it is . . . the very last challenge of the year! Make a quilt, block or project that is inspired by two things – Halloween and paper-piecing. You can either combine the two or just use one but let your creativity and your ideas run free!

Using Crumbs for the Monthly Challenge

WOW ! The GCQ monthly challenge for September is to use the “fortune” from a fortune cookie to create a quilt block or project. At the August meeting Lynne passed out fortune cookies for us to pick one. The one I picked was perfect for me. It said, “Treat yourself to a special time this coming weekend”, so today I did.

Many guild members know how I enjoy using crumbs or small scraps of fabric. I went through my crumb pile and pulled out several triangles that were trimmed from a past project. I did cut triangles from a neutral to create half-square triangle units then pinwheels. The pinwheels would only finish at 8 ½” so I decided to add scrappy strips as a frame so they would square up to 12 ½ “ and finish at 12”. This is what I made.

Plus, I decided to play some more with the crumbs left from trimming the triangles. I pulled out a few more strings and did not stop until I had pieced 8 more triangles.

What a perfect "fortune" for me. I look forward to seeing what others do inspired by their "fortune" cookie. I hope many guild members enjoy this monthly challenge as much as I did.

August Meeting Show and Tell

Lynne’s monthly challenge was to make a bag. About a dozen members participated and there was a wide variety - from a faux animal skin handbag to the small 3 pocket bag.

Clara shared a small duffle and matching handbag.

Marlene shared a colorful tote.

Following are a few of the projects shared at the August general meeting.

This is Sandra’s finished dragon. Some of us saw her stuffing the wings at Day Bee.

Jean adapted a pattern of Judy Lilly’s for this quilted wall-hanging.

Anita made this wall-hanging for a Maine contest with a potato theme. Notice the caterpillar made of beads.

Many members made red, white and blue 4 patches that were used to create the blocks for this comfort quilt which will be donated to the local VA hospice unit.

This quilt was made by the mother of a member.

Before presenting the program on how to critique art quilts, Paula Brown from Studio Art Quilt Associates shared a couple of her art quilts.

The first used several dye techniques

and the second was made of old ties.

Bag It Up

Can make any bag you want-a purse, tote, grocery bag or the hexagon carryall bag! Theme should match the type of bag you make (purse could be money, grocery bag have food, etc).

Christmas in July Challenge

Lynne’s challenge for this month was to make a block or project with a Christmas theme and a piece of summer added.

Lynne made a Santa block with summer fabric.

Sandra made a tree lady holding a bag of seashells.

For my block I used templates to piece a tree and appliquéd a bird.

I wish I could get photos of ALL the blocks and projects; but I can not.

Annual Picnic Plus

Today was our regular meeting day; however, along with some regular meeting activities, we enjoyed our annual picnic with A LOT of great food overlooking the water at the Yacht Cove clubhouse.

Here is some of the show and tell of members.

Charlotte had the baby quilt finished. We saw it last week in pieces at Day Bee.

I love the bright colors of Liz’s crayon quilt. She said it was a kit she won several years ago.

Dee has been busy quilting comfort quilts for children and adults.

Bonney has been VERY busy quilting comfort quilts for guild but took some time to make a baby gift. (Sorry the photo is blurry. Maybe some day I will get a camera with a faster shutter. )

Rosina has been busy finishing NICU quilts. She showed several.

Clara showed her purse made from $25 a yard fabric. She said it was hand dyed with some gold in it.

Zohra shared 2 embellished art pieces.

Deb shared 3 art quilts. This was one of Judy Lilly's flower patterns that Deb enlarged.

This month’s challenge from Lynne was to make a NO-Sew project. We had some good ones.

Clara made a quick fabric tote bag by tying.

Charlotte fused a mini quilt.

Dorothy made a heart coaster.

Bev tied red, white and blue strips of fabric to make a lovely wreath.

Monthly Challenge

The challenge for May was to make a quilt using only border fabrics; make one “Mexican or Canadian” themed, “Borders” bookstore theme, etc… Lynne made one with a Mexican theme as an example. Clara made a complete quilt project. Here are photos of them spread out. (The doll was Sandra's show and tell )

Monthly Challenge for June “Too Hot To Sew”

This is a “no sewing required” project. Any project that does not require any sewing, for example, a woven ribbon placemat that is held together by iron on fusible web. Lynne’s example is a placemat made from several colors of duck tape. That is fancy duck tape.

Easy – make a non-sewing block

Advanced – make an entire non-sewing quilt or project

Challange for May

Make a quilt using only border fabrics; make one “Mexican or Canadian” themed, “Borders” bookstore theme, etc.

April Challenge

The Monthly Challenge for April is for "Pillows". You can make a pillowcase, neck roll, quillow, simple square or any other possible pillow. It is due at the General Meeting in April.

This sample was made a a friend of Lynne's.

Lynne made a cute Gamecock triangle pillow but I did not get a photo because my camera batteries were low.

Easy - make a block using a pillow, bedroom, or sleep theme.
Advanced - make your pillow.

March Show and Tell

I try to take photos during the meeting to post. I am much more successful if the item is on the stage for viewing or the member brings their show to the side specifically for photographing.
